
Some of those terms are similar to the ones that figure in the Natyashastra such as: Natya, Ranga (Arangam, Aadukalam), Pindi, Karana and Mandala (Mandila) etc.

The Silappadikaram mentions many technical terms related to Dance. There are two existing commentaries on Silappadikaram one of which is ancient – the Arumpadavuri and the other is from the fifteenth century by Adiyarkunallar. These were said to be part of the Tamil Art traditions, the Muthamizh. The Silappadikaram also refers to another text on Dance: Jayantam, which prescribed the rules for the dance. The ancient Tamil classics, such as Silappadikaram (dated around the second century) attributed to Prince Ilango Adigal and the Manimekalai composed by the Poet Chithalai Chathanar (around the fifth century) have abundant references to Dance.
